CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Illinois men’s basketball team extended their impressive winning streak to 10 games following a triumphant home victory on Thursday night.
The Illini secured a 75-66 win against Washington, bringing their Big Ten record to 9-1 and advancing their overall tally to an impressive 18-1.
Keaton Wagler, who recently made headlines with a 46-point performance in Illinois’ weekend victory over Purdue, teamed up with fellow freshman David Mirkovic to deliver a formidable one-two punch against the Huskies.
Wagler contributed 22 points, while Mirkovic added 19 to the scoreboard.
Washington initially took control with a 7-0 run, but Illinois quickly countered with a 10-0 surge to seize the lead. The Huskies remained competitive throughout the match, narrowing the gap to five points with nine minutes remaining. However, crucial baskets from Wagler, Ben Humrichous, and others helped Illinois maintain their momentum and seal the victory.
Illinois is tied for first place in the Big Ten, along with Nebraska, Michigan and Michigan State.
The Illini now prepare for a tough test at No. 5 Nebraska on Sunday, Feb. 1. Brad Underwood’s team will look to avenge a loss in Champaign from Dec. 13, which is still their most recent loss. Sunday’s game between the Illini and the Huskers is set to tip-off at 3 p.m. CT on FS1.
