Authorities in Nebraska have taken a 46-year-old woman into custody on charges of child abuse. This development comes over two weeks after she brought a severely underweight 12-year-old boy to a hospital, where he was found to weigh just 47 pounds and had a dangerously low body temperature of 80 degrees.
For context, the average weight for a 12-year-old boy is typically around 90 pounds.
According to a report by KOLN, the boy was subsequently airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Omaha after initially being admitted to a facility in Lincoln on January 12. Medical professionals in Omaha diagnosed him with septic shock and pneumonia.
The boy’s condition, accompanied by other alarming symptoms, led investigators to suspect prolonged neglect, starvation, and possible torture, as stated by Lincoln Police.
Angela Lowe now faces multiple charges, including assault, false imprisonment, and child abuse.
A nurse said the boy was too weak to even lift himself up when he was brought into the hospital, and doctors did not expect him to live. As of Thursday, however, he was in critical but stable condition.
Police did not explain the connection between Lowe and boy but said she is no longer his legal guardian. He is now in state custody, and Lowe is barred from contacting him.
