A resident of Stoney Creek, Tennessee, is facing charges of second-degree murder following a fatal overdose incident dating back to 2021.

The Carter County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) announced that Darrell Lewis, aged 53, was taken into custody on Thursday.

The investigation was initiated on May 5, 2021, when authorities discovered the body of a 39-year-old man in a Hampton residence. An autopsy concluded that the man died of an overdose.

Authorities revealed that the deceased had acquired the drugs from Lewis, ultimately leading to his death.

In early January, the case was brought before a Carter County Grand Jury, which subsequently indicted Lewis on charges of second-degree murder.

On Thursday, Lewis was booked into the Carter County Jail and released later that day after posting at $100,000 bond, according to the CCSO.

“This was a lengthy investigation, and I commend our investigators for continuing to pursue justice for the victim and his family,” Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said in the release. “Fentanyl is an extremely dangerous drug, and it poses a serious problem for our community. In addition to being potentially fatal to those who use it, fentanyl also poses a risk of death to those who are exposed to it accidentally. Our officers are working constantly to identify and prosecute those who sell drugs, particularly those who sell drugs that lead to death, and hold them accountable for their actions.”
