Two men are recovering in the hospital after a shooting erupted when a store clerk attempted to prevent a theft.
In Jacksonville, Florida, a gunfight on Saturday resulted in serious injuries to two individuals, with stray bullets hitting nearby businesses and vehicles. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the situation.
Officers from the JSO quickly responded to reports of a shooting incident on Shirley Avenue, near Lakeshore, during the afternoon hours.
Authorities discovered that a store clerk had intervened when they noticed someone allegedly attempting to steal. This confrontation led to a man opening fire on the clerk.
A JSO deputy explained to First Coast News, “Gunfire was exchanged, striking several businesses and vehicles. We have detained several individuals connected to this event. It appears to be an isolated occurrence with no ongoing threat to the community.”
The clerk, a man in his early 20s, was injured with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his chest and was transported to a local hospital by emergency crews.
After the incident, the JSO deputy said, a man, also in his early 20s was taken in a car to the hospital. He is currently in critical condition and suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The investigation is still ongoing, and JSO said findings are preliminary, since detectives are still processing the crime scene for evidence. Detectives are also speaking with witnesses and canvassing for additional material.
