A major traffic incident unfolded on Saturday morning in Central California’s Tulare County when nearly 60 vehicles were involved in a collision, prompting the temporary shutdown of Highway 99 in both directions. This information comes from the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The CHP began receiving reports of the chaotic scene shortly after 8:15 a.m. The accident took place in both the northbound and southbound lanes near Avenue 24, approximately 40 miles north of Bakersfield.
Ten individuals sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. Updates regarding their conditions have not yet been released. Meanwhile, the remaining people involved were taken by bus to the International Agri-Center in Tulare for safety and support.
Initially, Tulare County officials posted on Facebook that the crash involved 150 vehicles, but the CHP later clarified that the number was actually 59 vehicles caught in the pileup.
CHP investigators attribute the crash, at least in part, to foggy conditions, noting that visibility at the time was limited to between 100 and 200 feet, which likely contributed to the chain-reaction collision.
Highway 99 fully reopened by 2:30 p.m., according to the CHP.
