SAVANNAH, Ga. – Good morning and happy snowy Sunday! We hope everyone has had a chance to enjoy the winter wonderland.
This morning, a Weather Alert is in effect as dangerously cold wind chills and freezing temperatures persist. The mercury is expected to drop a few more degrees before sunrise, already surpassing the previous record low of 23° set in 1977. We’re keeping a close eye on how low the temperature will dip today.
Strong northwest winds are gusting between 30 and 35 miles per hour, ushering in the frigid air. These conditions make it feel like the temperature is in the single digits. As you prepare to head out, remember the Four P’s: people, pets, pipes, and plants.
The gusty winds are expected to stick around throughout the day. Despite abundant sunshine, temperatures will only rise to the mid to upper 30s. Any melting of snow or ice will be minimal, and as temperatures plunge again tonight into the upper teens and low 20s, residual moisture may refreeze, creating more icy patches by tomorrow morning.
On the brighter side, a warming trend is on the horizon. By Groundhog Day, we can expect plenty of sunshine with temperatures climbing to near 50 degrees. This warming continues into Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs reaching the upper 50s to near 60. A cold front is predicted to pass through on Wednesday, bringing some rain but sparing us from winter weather. Temperatures will dip slightly on Thursday, with highs in the lower 50s, but overall, conditions will improve significantly as we progress through the week.
