Residents of Interlachen and nearby areas have been advised by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office to brace for dense smoke throughout Sunday evening and overnight.

PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. — A significant brush fire in the vicinity of Interlachen, which scorched over 300 acres on Saturday and led to evacuations, is now largely under control, according to the Florida Forest Service. With the situation improving, road closures and evacuation orders have been rescinded.

Situated near Pace Court and Keuka Road, the fire has been reported as 75% contained, covering 314 acres, as stated by the Florida Forest Service’s Waccasassa Forestry Center shortly before 4 p.m.

As of a 5 p.m. update from the sheriff’s office on Sunday, Keuka Road, south of West Strickland, has been reopened.

Residents in the Interlachen area should prepare for significant smoke levels through Sunday night, which may affect visibility on CR 315 and SR 20.

Drivers are asked to allow extra time for morning commutes in west Putnam County.

About 20 homes were evacuated earlier Saturday. Ludie Bond with the Florida Forest Service told First Coast News that only two outbuildings have been confirmed destroyed.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and no injuries have been reported.

“We are asking residents to not burn outdoors due to dry weather, winds and hard freeze,” PCSO said.

First Coast News will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as soon as more information becomes available.
