AUGUSTA, Ga ()- A tragic discovery was made on Sunday when a homeless man was found deceased near the railroad tracks at the intersection of 13th Street and Walton Way. The Richmond County Coroner’s Office confirmed his death shortly before 5 p.m.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has stated that, at present, there are no indications of foul play involved in this case.

As temperatures are set to plunge to a frigid 19 degrees tonight, deputies are actively patrolling areas where unhoused individuals often stay. They are offering rides to local warming centers to ensure safety from the cold.

Although adults have the autonomy to refuse shelter, the Sheriff’s Office is committed to deploying their Homeless Outreach Team. They are collaborating with community partners to encourage the homeless to seek refuge from the harsh weather conditions.

Business owners and residents who notice individuals in need are urged to reach out to dispatch at 706-821-1080 to facilitate assistance.

An autopsy has been scheduled. Authorities know the man’s identity, but are withholding it until his next of kin can be notified.
