Augusta Commission Set to Decide on City’s Maintenance Plans

AUGUSTA, Ga. () – Despite the brisk weather, visitors are still flocking to the Riverwalk, where one visitor emphasized the importance of maintaining a good appearance.

“Overall, I would say it’s a lovely area, truly beautiful. However, it could use a bit more trimming and cleaning since I noticed some fallen trees, but it remains a stunning spot,” remarked Andria Georgiou, who hails from Cypress.

Responsibility for clearing leaves from the Riverwalk falls to the Park Department, while cemetery upkeep is managed by a separate entity.

Similarly, landscaping duties for government buildings are handled by another distinct department.

As for overgrown and abandoned lots, yet another department is tasked with their maintenance.

Right of ways? Another city department.

That’s why some Commissioners say it’s time for a new vegetation maintenance department.

“It would beautify Augusta to have one department instead of a bunch of different departments going out there and zigzag cutting. It just makes sense to have one department,” said Commissioner Catherine Smith Rice.

But some want to cut growing grass without growing government, and would like to see all vegetation maintenance go under the Engineering Department where Doctor Malik is in charge.

“I think Malik would rather have it underneath his department so he could control the outcome of it that way we have one finger to point at if something goes wrong,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Wayne Guillfoyle.

Taxpayers want to see Augusta property maintained but do they want a new department created to do it.

“Just rely on the current groups that are already accomplishing it that already know what needs to be done,” said Andrew Berenbak.

Commissioners will have to decide who will get the job of keeping up appearances.
