Authorities are keeping all possibilities open, including foul play, as they continue the search for Savannah Guthrie’s missing 84-year-old mother. The TODAY co-host’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, vanished from her residence in Pima County over the weekend, with Sheriff Chris Nanos describing the situation as “very concerning.”

During a press conference on February 1, Sheriff Nanos explained the unusual nature of the case, saying, “This one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found and located just looking at the scene.”

Described by Nanos as not being in good physical health, Nancy was last seen by family members in her home between 9:30 and 9:45 p.m. on January 31. She was reported missing around noon the following day by a relative.

In response, search efforts have intensified, utilizing K-9 units, drones, and a helicopter. These measures were prompted by Nanos’s admission of “some concerns” regarding the findings at the scene.

Search teams—including K-9s, aerial drones and a helicopter—were sent out after Nanos noted that authorities had “some concerns” about what was discovered at the scene.

“I don’t want to get into those details,” he told reporters when asked to expand on what was discovered. “I would just tell you that it’s certainly of grave concern to us just what we see there.”

Nanos added that homicide detectives were also working the case, which was “not standard” in a typical missing persons case.

“I hope we find her,” he said, adding that foul play could not be ruled out. “I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us.”

Although Nanos said the 84-year-old did have some physical issues, her family reported she “has no cognitive issues at all.”

Savannah Guthrie Speaks Out About Missing Mom

Savannah Guthrie missed the Monday, Feb. 2 episode of the NBC morning show, where she’s worked for more than a decade. She released a statement that morning thanking those assisting in the search effort.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she told Today.com. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

She continued, “We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at (520) 351-4900.”

Sunday TODAY anchor Willie Geist also issued a plea on X.

“If you have any information about the location of our dear friend Savannah Guthrie’s wonderful mother Nancy, please call police in Arizona,” he wrote. “She is missing.”

Nancy is described as 5-foot-5 and weighing 150 pounds. She has brown hair and blue eyes.

Nanos said the search to find Nancy remains on going, adding, “I just hope that we can find her and that somebody might know something.”
