Union expressed her delight in seeing Zaya connect with others who share her enthusiasm for research, data, and astrobiology. “She’s found a community of people who are as passionate about science as she is,” Union remarked. However, she humorously admitted that she and Wade occasionally find it challenging to keep up with Zaya’s academic pursuits.

“In that department, I’m going to say we might not be the best,” she quipped. “Sometimes she talks about things that leave us nodding along while I’m secretly Googling under the table because I have no idea what she’s discussing.”

Union, originally from Nebraska, also noted the thrilling opportunities Zaya has encountered in her academic journey. “It’s incredible to see her working with some of the world’s top biologists,” she shared. “Zaya is genuinely happy with where she is right now.”

The Nebraska-native added that Zaya’s opportunities have been especially exciting to watch. “She’s working with some of the world’s leading biologists, so she’s very, very happy where she’s at,” she said.

Outside of the classroom, Zaya continues to be a strong voice for LGBTQ+ community and their visibility. The model and influencer came out as transgender in 2020 and has remained a very dedicated and outspoken for the community, highlighting the importance of queer rights and representation.

During Gabrielle’s interview with People, she also offered guidance for parents who are learning how to best support their children through similar journeys.

“As long as you lead with love and that your child knows that you will be there no matter what, and [that] we can figure this out together and that I’m gonna make mistakes but please correct me … so I can learn to not make the same mistakes more than once …. As long as you start with, ‘My child is not disposable,’ [you] kinda can’t go wrong after that,” she said.

She added, “Just lead with love and respect. Your child’s peace and safety should be your number one concern. Less … ‘How are the neighbors or family members going to react?’ ”
