On Monday night, New South Wales Police conducted a search operation in the area, which lasted until 11:30 PM.
At around 7:30 PM, rescuers successfully lifted the man to safety and transported him via helicopter to Nepean Hospital for further evaluation.
Acting Inspector Michael Brown emphasized the importance of being equipped with essential tools, which can be critical in urgent, life-threatening situations faced by bushwalkers.
“Although the Blue Mountains National Park is a popular destination for hiking enthusiasts, careful planning is essential for every trip,” he advised.
“The 71-year-old man’s possession of a personal locator beacon (PLB) was a decisive factor in saving his life,” Brown added.
While Elliot is an experienced bushwalker, he was not properly dressed for the overnight weather conditions.
“Bushwalkers are urged to always submit trip intention form to the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services and to have enough clothing, food ,water and a personal locator beacon (PLB) with you,” Brown said.
“These items will help you stay hydrated, maintain your body temperature, and get helps promptly when you are lost.”
