On Monday evening, Senator Mitch McConnell from Kentucky admitted himself to a hospital, displaying symptoms akin to the flu, as confirmed by his office on Tuesday.
A representative for McConnell stated that the 83-year-old senator began showing these symptoms over the weekend, prompting him to visit a local hospital “as a precautionary measure.”
“His outlook is promising, and he appreciates the excellent medical attention he’s receiving,” the spokesperson revealed in a statement. “Senator McConnell remains in regular communication with his team and eagerly anticipates resuming his duties in the Senate.”
This update follows McConnell’s absence from Senate votes that took place on both Monday and Tuesday.
McConnell, who has announced he won’t seek reelection, has experienced several health issues recently. Notably, in 2023, he had two incidents where he appeared to momentarily freeze during public speeches. Additionally, he has endured several falls, with the latest occurring last October while heading to a vote at the U.S. Capitol.
The news came as McConnell missed Senate votes on Monday and Tuesday.
McConnell, who is not seeking reelection, has had several medical episodes in recent years, including two notable episodes in 2023 in which he appeared to freeze for several seconds while speaking publicly. He has also suffered multiple falls, most recently while on his way to vote at the U.S. Capitol last October.
The announcement that McConell’s current term would be his last came on his 83rd birthday last February, which he called “a good day as any” to share his decision.
