Former tennis pro and ex-state Liberal deputy leader Sam Groth has announced he will quit Victorian politics next week, triggering a byelection in his seat of Nepean on the Mornington Peninsula just months out from the 2026 state election.

This afternoon, the first-term MP revealed his decision to step down through a formal statement.

“I plan to resign from the Victorian Parliament as the Member for Nepean next week to explore new opportunities,” Groth announced.

Groth served as deputy leader of the Liberal Party under both former leader Brad Battin and current leader Jess Wilson. (The Age)

“Serving the people of Nepean has been a privilege, and I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the trust they bestowed upon me, allowing me to represent our community,” he expressed.

“My deep appreciation goes to my staff for their unwavering professionalism, dedication, and hard work in supporting Nepean’s residents,” he added.

He concluded by expressing his best wishes, stating, “I wish Jess Wilson and the Liberal team the very best for the upcoming November election.”

“Most importantly, I thank my family, my wife Britt and our twin boys, for their unwavering love and support.”
