In an unsettling turn of events, posters featuring a CCTV image of the man accused of pouring hot coffee on baby Luka in 2024 have been prominently displayed on a construction site wall along Chapel Street in Prahan. This act has sparked considerable controversy and indignation among the community.
Melbourne’s Lord Mayor, Nicholas Reece, did not mince words as he condemned the posters, labeling them “absolutely abhorrent.” In a pointed statement, he reflected on the misuse of street art for such divisive and inflammatory purposes.
Reece emphasized the potential of contemporary street art to serve as a powerful tool for political discourse and social activism. However, he was quick to condemn the current misuse of such art, lamenting how Drew’s creations were being manipulated into symbols of hatred and division.
Particularly distressing to Reece was the inclusion of the image of the Bondi shooter within the artwork. “To use such an image is just sick,” he remarked, highlighting the ongoing grief experienced by both the affected families and the broader community.
“To use the image of the Bondi shooter is just sick. Families are still grieving, the community is still grieving.”
Reece said his team has worked around the clock to remove the posters.
Drew also condemned the person behind the posters.
“Whoever made these posters doesn’t believe in Australia,” he said.
“They are not patriotic. They claim to be patriots, but we’re the patriots. We’re the ones who love Australia.”
