A New Jersey community is rallying to find a missing Rutgers University student, offering a reward to aid in the search. Mortimer Wortman, a student at Rutgers, vanished on November 21, last seen in the parking lot of Regional Day School in Jackson.

The circumstances surrounding Wortman’s disappearance remain unclear, with authorities yet to determine if foul play is involved. However, Wortman’s brother has expressed concern over an individual who was previously jailed in July for threatening Wortman and a woman with a knife, urging for his arrest. This man, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly met Wortman at Regional High School on the evening he disappeared. An argument allegedly ensued, after which Wortman supposedly ran into the woods, as reported by NJ.com.

Officials have not charged this individual in connection with Wortman’s disappearance, but questions linger about his involvement. Notably, the man delayed 16 hours before alerting authorities of Wortman’s disappearance, raising further suspicions. The nature of the relationship between Wortman and this man has not been made public.

Despite finding Wortman’s car abandoned at the school, the search for him continues. The community remains hopeful that the reward will prompt anyone with information to come forward and help bring Wortman home.

Wortman remains unaccounted for despite his car being found at the school.

Wortman was described as standing 5-feet and 10 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, and having dark brown hair and brown eyes. He has a nose piercing and several earrings in both ears. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, burgundy hoodie, and blue jeans.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts should call Jackson police at 732-928-1111 and press “0” to speak with a dispatcher.

Mortimer Wortman’s case is being covered as part of Crime Online’s “Finding the Lost: Black and Missing” series, which will feature a missing Black person every day in February. The full series can be read here.
