In Spartanburg, South Carolina, a recent development has brought attention to charities operating within the state. Officials have unveiled a comprehensive list of suspended charities, with several of these organizations based in the Upstate region.

This initiative by state authorities is designed to serve as a resource for donors, enabling them to identify charities that are not adhering to the Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act. The list is intended to safeguard the public by highlighting organizations that are not in compliance with state regulations.

The Office of South Carolina Secretary of State, Mark Hammond, has published an extensive 55-page document detailing the charities that have been suspended as of this past Monday. The suspension of these organizations stems from their failure to submit necessary registrations or financial reports, coupled with neglecting to pay the fines incurred from such non-compliance.

Suspension means these charities are barred from soliciting donations within South Carolina, a measure that aims to ensure transparency and accountability among charitable organizations. South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis has emphasized that this list is crucial in protecting public interests by preventing non-compliant organizations from potentially misleading donors.

South Carolina Treasurer, Curtis Loftis said the list helps protect the public.

“It just shows you who has not acted appropriately. Sometimes it’s just paperwork, things that you can fix, but lots of times it’s a bigger deal,” Loftis said. “All the money that’s given to them is given because a donor trust and when that trust is broken, its not good. That’s what the Secretary of State does, he lets everybody know, ‘hey, you got to be careful with this.’”

The secretary’s office asks if you see a suspended charity asking for money, please report it by either calling the Charities Division at 1-888-CHARITI (242-7484).
