Over the past decade, the progressive left has gained a reputation for advocating the removal of historical statues or, in some instances, taking direct action to vandalize or demolish them under the banner of “social justice.”

Initially, their focus was on monuments from the Confederacy era. However, as critics foresaw, the movement did not stop there. Activists soon turned their attention to statues of the Founding Fathers and other significant American figures who played pivotal roles in establishing and shaping the nation.

The movement also targeted the renowned explorer Christopher Columbus. During the 2020 protests following George Floyd’s death, several Columbus statues were beheaded or toppled. In a striking incident, agitators associated with Antifa and Black Lives Matter pulled down a Columbus statue in Baltimore and discarded it into the city’s Inner Harbor on Independence Day.

They also took aim at legendary explorer and discoverer Christopher Columbus, with some statues of Columbus either being beheaded or ripped down during the 2020 George Floyd riots. Antifa/Black Lives Matter-led agitators even went so far as to tear down the Columbus statue in Baltimore and dump it into the city’s Inner Harbor on Independence Day that same year.
