A fresh perspective on the contemporary family dynamic is hitting the big screen this week.

“Jimpa,” a semi-autobiographical drama directed by Sophie Hyde, known for her work on “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande,” features an illustrious cast. The film stars Academy Award winner Olivia Colman alongside Emmy winner John Lithgow, exploring three generations within the queer community’s intricate tapestry.

The narrative centers around filmmaker Hannah, portrayed by Colman, as she embarks on a journey to Amsterdam with her trans non-binary teen, Frances. Their mission is to visit Hannah’s gay father, Jim, played by Lithgow. The plot thickens when Frances opts to extend their stay for a year, prompting Hannah to face her past and reassess her parenting decisions.

In a conversation with On The Red Carpet during the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, John Lithgow expressed the film’s timely relevance. “I think it’s a sign of the times,” he remarked. “This is not just a great film; it really is an important film for this moment.”

For Sophie Hyde, this project holds a special personal connection. The character of Frances is played by Hyde’s own child, Aud Mason-Hyde, marking their debut in feature films. Hyde emphasized her deliberate choice of casting actors capable of delivering profound empathy in their performances, adding another layer of authenticity to the film.

“You bring in a natural like Olivia and you trust in their take,” Hyde said of Colman. “Her instincts are so amazing, you don’t want to fiddle with that too much.”

What should audiences take away from watching the film? Mason-Hyde hopes viewers watch the film and “celebrate queerness and difference.”

“Jimpa” first gained attention at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and later served as the opening night gala for the Adelaide Film Festival.

“Jimpa” opens in theaters on February 6.
