A 77-year-old man from West Virginia was taken into custody on Monday, accused of attempting to murder his wife.
According to a report from WOWK, the incident unfolded around 4 a.m. when police responded to a call from the man’s wife. She reported being trapped in a bedroom as her husband, Warren Bruce Crowder, tried to break down the door with an axe.
When officers arrived, they saw the woman through the window of the locked room, while Crowder was trying to force his way in by kicking the door. Despite their presence, Crowder did not comply with requests to open the door, according to the criminal complaint.
Police eventually entered the residence by force and apprehended Crowder. During questioning, Crowder allegedly confessed to firing a gun through the door in an attempt to reach his wife. Upon inspection, officers found evidence of multiple gunshots and shrapnel on the bedroom door.
Crowder reportedly expressed his anger to the police, admitting that he knew his wife was hiding just a few feet away from the door, on the bed.
The wife said was was sitting on the bed, no more than 6 feet from the door.
According to WCHS, the couple had gotten into some kind of argument.
Crowder was charged with attempted murder and wanton endangerment. He was given a $50,000 cash-only bond.
