In an upcoming episode of the beloved children’s show Peppa Pig, viewers will see George, Peppa’s younger brother, diagnosed with moderate hearing loss.

This development follows last year’s buzz when the show, which has been entertaining audiences for 22 years, introduced a new baby to Mummy Pig’s family, and now the news about George’s condition is sparking discussions globally.

According to an announcement shared with People, the show’s creators, Hasbro, collaborated closely with the UK’s National Deaf Children’s Society and deaf producer and script consultant Camilla Arnold to ensure George’s storyline is both authentic and considerate.

The episode titled “Hearing Loss” is scheduled to premiere on Friday and will uniquely explore George’s world through his auditory experience. Jodie Ounsley, a Gladiators competitor and the first deaf player for England’s rugby team, will guest star as George’s audiologist.

The announcement has been positively received online, with social media platform X buzzing with supportive comments from parents who describe the episode as “a gentle, powerful way to teach kids about difference, empathy, and inclusion” and celebrate it as “a meaningful moment for representation.”

Swarming X in the wake of the news, users were keen to praise creators for the storyline and shedding light on differences.

One user penned: ‘This is important, honestly. A lot of kids watch Peppa Pig every day. Seeing George as deaf will help children understand that being different is normal. It also helps kids with hearing issues feel seen and not alone…

‘This is a good step, even for a cartoon… I didn’t know George is deaf. It’s good that kids will see this and learn that being deaf doesn’t make you less. Shows like Peppa Pig really help teach kindness and understanding’.

Further praise came from users writing: ‘What a beautiful and important step for Peppa Pig! Giving George a moderate hearing loss storyline—crafted with deaf community experts and charities—isn’t just great representation…

‘It’s a gentle, powerful way to teach kids about difference, empathy and inclusion…

‘For the millions of deaf kids worldwide who rarely see themselves on screen, this matters so much: it lets them feel seen, valued, and like they belong. A win for kindness, and for making kids’ TV truly reflect the world we live in…

‘Peppa Pig is introducing a new storyline revealing that George Pig is moderately deaf, marking a meaningful moment for representation in children’s television…

‘The storyline aims to promote empathy, awareness, and inclusion for young viewers and families worldwide.’

One X user, hypothesised that George’s hearing difficulties were made evident in the opening credits, as each character is seen to snort. When Daddy Pig snorts, Mummy Pig and Peppa react in shock while George does not react at all.

The fan wrote: ‘WAIT WAIT WAIT In the intro to each episode – each character snorts after getting announced, Daddy pig ALWAYS goes last because his is the loudest…

‘Now in the scene – Mummy pig always reacts shocked by the sheer volume and Peppa physically moves backwards due her size. George DOESNT REACT AT ALL…

‘If George has been partially dead this whole time – it would EXPLAIN his lack of reaction each time. That or standing next to Daddy pig every day for the intro has lead to him developing hearing issues. (Apologies for low quality picture)’.
