The 1989 comedy classic The ‘Burbs, starring Tom Hanks, gets a modern twist in Peacock’s new series that reimagines the familiar suburban setting as a hub of mystery and intrigue. Drawing inspiration from the film’s plot, this series invites viewers to step into the shoes of Keke Palmer’s character, Samira. As a new mother adjusting to her new life, Samira, along with her husband Rob, portrayed by Jack Whitehall, moves into Rob’s quaint childhood home in Hinkley Hills. This town, celebrated for its safety, is soon clouded by suspicion with the arrival of an eerie new neighbor.
Samira finds herself drawn into the enigmatic happenings next door, unable to resist the allure of a good mystery. Joined by a cast of curious neighbors played by Julia Duffy, Paula Pell, and Mark Proksch, Samira’s investigative instincts kick in, leading her to question the seemingly peaceful facade of Hinkley Hills. The community’s perception of safety is challenged as they unravel the unsettling secrets that threaten their quiet lives. Could it be that their tranquil cul-de-sac is not as secure as everyone believes?
The series teases audiences with an exclusive clip shared with Decider, which highlights the lengths to which Samira and her fellow inquisitive neighbors will go to uncover the truth about the mysterious newcomer, Gary. The clip, available at the top of Decider’s page, reveals a tense moment as Samira, alongside Dana (Pell) and Tod (Proksch), infiltrates Gary’s home armed with a basket of wine as a peace offering—a clever ruse to gather evidence of Gary’s suspicious activities.
As they step into the seemingly deserted and unsettling home, Samira and Dana announce their presence, masking their true intentions. The scene unfolds with the trio quickly finding bizarre clues that deepen the mystery surrounding Gary, setting the stage for a thrilling exploration of what secrets lie beneath the surface of this so-called “safest town in America.”
In the clip, Samira, Dana (Pell) and Tod (Proksch) sneak into Gary’s house with a basket of wine so they can snoop around his house under the guise of trying to make amends. Samira and Dana attempt to announce their arrival as they walk right into the creepy house, which seems to be empty. But they waste no time before they quickly begin gathering some strange clues about Gary.
“It’s your friendly neighbors,” Dana calls out as they sneak in. “Announcing ourselves!”
But there’s no going back once the door slams shut behind them, spooking all three of them.
As they look around the house, Tod is the first to point out the most suspicious characteristic so far: Gary is still using the furniture the real estate agent used to stage the house when it was being sold. “That’s so odd,” Todd comments.
Dana notes it must be “odd” if even Tod – who likes to moon-bathe naked in the woods – thinks so. “What do do you think it means?” she asks.
“I think it means he’s not planning on staying very long,” Tod speculates.
But their snooping doesn’t end there. Samira heads towards the door to the basement, dead set on getting some answers with or without Gary there.
The ‘Burbs premieres Sunday, Feb. 8, on Peacock.
And for those looking to tune into the original movie that started it all, The Burbs is also streaming on Peacock.
