AUGUSTA, Ga. () – After a dedicated nine-month journey, the Charter Review Committee is gearing up to conclude its mission.

“I believe we have excelled in our responsibilities. Now, it’s time to move into the playoffs,” expressed committee member Clint Bryant.

The committee has one final issue to resolve, which will be addressed at their upcoming meeting in two weeks.

Subsequently, the UGA School of Government will formalize the proposed changes into the appropriate written format.

These revisions will require approval from state legislators, and the committee is mindful of the looming deadline for this process.

“There is the March 6th deadline. That crossover is there and it has to be passed by one house before or it doesn’t even see light of day,” Gayla Keesee, co-president of the League of Woman voters

If the deadline isn’t met, that would mean the charter changes could not be voted on in November and would have to wait 2027.

“As a citizen voting, I think it makes sense to have it this year. I don’t understand, there is a portion of the community who would like to see it put off until next year,” said Charter Committee Chair Marcie Wilhelmi.

The Charter Committee will be keeping with its every other week meeting schedule, even with the deadline. Some members are saying at this point, there’s no reason to rush the process.

“There’s nothing urgent. We still have a charter, it’s not like the charter is going to be adopted tomorrow if we have something urgent, so I don’t think there an urgency, so much as we need to get it right,” said committee member Sheffie Robinson.

The Committee has had its say on what changes are needed, but it remains to be seen when voters will get their say.

The next three meetings are scheduled for Feb. 19, March 5, and March 19 starting at 10 a.m. at the Municipal Building.
