A Maryland man faces serious charges after allegedly attempting to murder Russell Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump. This unsettling incident has sparked discussions about political tensions and the safety of public officials.
Colin Demarco, a 26-year-old, reportedly feared that Trump’s potential reelection could result in what he referred to as a “fascist takeover.” According to court records, Demarco arrived at Vought’s residence in Northern Virginia wearing a surgical mask and gloves, raising alarms about his intentions. The U.S. Marshals Service, involved in the investigation, discovered that Demarco had allegedly penned a manifesto, which included details about weapons and a troubling “Body Disposal Guide,” as reported by CBS News.
In response to the incident, a spokesperson for the Office of Management and Budget expressed gratitude, stating, “We are grateful for the work of law enforcement in keeping Director Vought and his family safe.” This statement underscores the ongoing concerns about the safety of public figures amid heightened political rhetoric.
Vought has been a significant figure in discussions about federal employment policies, particularly due to his involvement in crafting Schedule F. This initiative aimed to simplify the process of firing federal workers, which has been a contentious issue, leading to numerous threats against him.
Since the charges were brought against Demarco, Vought has been under the protection of the U.S. Marshals Service, highlighting the serious nature of the threats and the measures taken to ensure his safety.
“We are grateful for the work of law enforcement in keeping Director Vought and his family safe,” a spokesperson for OMB said in a statement.
Vought played a role in the formulation of Schedule F, which would make it easier for the federal government to fire workers, which prompted numerous death threats.
Since the alleged attempted murder charge, Vought has been under U.S. Marshals Service protection.
The criminal complaint filed in Arlington County reportedly said that Ring doorbell camera captured Demarco at Vought’s front door wearing gloves, a backpack, sunglasses, and a surgical mask. He was also seen looking through Vought’s mailbox and asked a neighbor if anyone was home.
Demarco had also told agents that he found the November 2024 election to be the “lowest point in his life” and feared “impending war and a fascist takeover.” He also had expressed support for alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin Luigi Mangione.
