In Spartanburg County, South Carolina, a 19-year-old has been denied bond following charges related to the fatal shooting of his girlfriend on Tuesday night. The incident has left the community reeling as authorities investigate the tragic event.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as Jayvion Nyrek Rice, who now faces charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The victim, 21-year-old Skyy Ernestasjah Logan, was shot at a residence located on Farm Creek Road in Inman.

Authorities responded to the scene shortly after 9 p.m. after Rice’s mother made a distressing 911 call. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Logan on the front porch, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Logan was immediately transported to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where medical staff attempted to save her life. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after 10 p.m., marking a tragic end to the evening.

Initially reported as an accident, the shooting has come under scrutiny as Rice admitted to deputies that he had discharged the firearm negligently inside the home. The investigation continues as officials work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident.

However, investigators noted that evidence from the scene and Rice’s account were inconsistent. Deputies then began investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Deputies said that Rice and Logan were in a relationship, with initial findings showing that a domestic situation was occurring at the time of the shooting.

During Rice’s bond hearing Wednesday, the judge informed him that if convicted, he could face 30 years or life in prison for Logan’s murder. His second charge carries a sentence of up to five years, unless he is sentenced to life without parole.

Before the hearing concluded, Assistant Solicitor Anthony Leibert asked the judge for Rice to be held without bond, sharing more details from investigators about what is believed to have happened.

“[Sky’s] three-year-old little boy was sitting on a couch after the shooting, calling out his mother’s name. He doesn’t know yet, he’s never going to see her again,” he said. “She was shot one time in the neck — in the chest area. [Video shows] blood spurting out of her body before she collapses and dies.”

Deputies asked anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact Sgt. Will Ussery at (864) 503-4536 or wussery@spartanburgcounty.org.
