Luigi Mangione voiced his frustration about facing consecutive trials for the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, claiming it amounted to double jeopardy during a heated outburst on Friday.

As he was being led out from the New York courtroom, Mangione exclaimed, “It’s essentially the same trial twice. One plus one equals two. By any logic, that’s double jeopardy.”

His lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, echoed these concerns, arguing that the principle of double jeopardy was being misused as a “weapon” against Mangione.

The remarks followed a brief court session focused on setting dates for his upcoming state and federal trials related to Thompson’s shooting death.

After extensive talks with both prosecutors and defense attorneys, Judge Gregory Carro announced that the state trial would commence on June 8. However, if an appeal affects the federal trial timeline, the state trial could be rescheduled to September 8.

Agnifilo protested, saying her client was being put in an “untenable” situation and that the defense would not be ready on June 8.

“Mr. Mangione is being put in an untenable situation,” Agnifilo said. “This is a tug-of-war between two different prosecution offices.”
