In Birmingham, Alabama, two individuals from Jefferson County are facing charges related to a firearm purchasing scheme, as announced by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona.
Habonisun Chaverst, aged 28 from Center Point, and Keonna Cephus, aged 38 from Birmingham, have been accused of conspiring to conduct straw purchases of firearms and providing false information on ATF Form 4473. Additionally, Cephus faces charges of making false statements during the acquisition of a firearm.
Authorities allege that from October to November 2024, Chaverst collaborated with Cephus to acquire six firearms from a dealer with federal licensing. It is claimed that Cephus acted as the straw purchaser, misleadingly declaring herself as the actual buyer, while she was purchasing the firearms on behalf of Chaverst.
According to Escalona, Cephus acquired two .40-caliber Glock 22 pistols, two .40-caliber Glock 23 pistols, and two 9mm Glock 17 pistols from Hoover Tactical Firearms in November 2024. Prosecutors assert that the funds used for these purchases were provided by Chaverst.
