In a quiet neighborhood in Hawthorne, Florida, a troubling incident has sparked concern among residents. Zackary Terrell Harnage, 48, found himself in handcuffs after allegedly breaking into the home of a woman who was away on an extended trip. The arrest unfolded yesterday, following a series of events that began earlier in the week.

The chain of events was set in motion on February 5, when an attentive neighbor took it upon herself to check on the house in the Campville area. Her last visit on February 3 had revealed no abnormalities. However, upon her return at around 11:30 a.m. on February 5, she was met with a disconcerting scene—a shattered rear window. Her initial instinct to enter the home was halted when she noticed the back door ajar, shards of glass scattered on the floor, and the unmistakable smell of cigarettes lingering in the air. Choosing caution, she promptly retreated and dialed 911.

Responding deputies soon arrived at the scene and discovered Harnage nearby, loitering by the side of the road. His demeanor was reportedly anxious, and he claimed to be in pain, offering only his first name. Meanwhile, a review of security footage captured Harnage’s actions in stark detail, revealing his presence both inside the house and on its grounds.

According to the allegations, Harnage gained entry by breaking a window, proceeding to rifle through the homeowner’s possessions. In an apparent attempt to cover his tracks, he also removed several security cameras. The evidence, however, proved incriminating, leading to his swift arrest.

Harnage allegedly entered the home after breaking a window, and when inside, he allegedly rummaged through the homeowner’s belongings and removed security cameras.

When deputies tried to take Harnage into custody, he reportedly resisted, but he was eventually placed in handcuffs.

Post Miranda, Harnage reportedly declined to speak with a deputy.

Harnage, who is described as homeless on the arrest report, has been charged with burglary of an unoccupied dwelling, property damage, and resisting an officer without violence. He was also booked on a warrant for violating probation on a traffic offense; his probation officer reported in October 2025 that he had not checked in for two months, had not paid his cost of supervision, had not paid his fines, and had not provided proof that he had completed his community service hours or attended Advanced DUI School.

Harnage has five misdemeanor convictions (one violent) and is on probation. Judge Susan Miller-Jones ordered him held without bail until the probation violation is resolved and set bail at $105,000 on the new charges.

Articles about arrests are based on reports from law enforcement agencies. The charges listed are taken from the arrest report and/or court records and are only accusations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
