Michelle Yeoh continues to impress and innovate in the world of film.

The Oscar-winning actress, known for her captivating performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, takes on a new challenge in the short film Sandiwara. This intriguing project, directed by Sean Baker, is set to debut at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 13, 2026. Baker, celebrated for his previous Best Picture winner Anora, enlists Yeoh to portray five unique characters, showcasing her remarkable versatility.

Sandiwara unfolds against the vibrant backdrop of a Malaysian night market, weaving together five separate narratives through Yeoh’s diverse roles. The film promises to transcend mere fashion, delving deep into cinema and storytelling to illuminate the essence of Malaysian culture. Its title, derived from a Malay term meaning “drama, theatrical performance, or play,” aptly reflects the film’s complex narrative and cultural themes.

Filmed in the picturesque location of Penang, Malaysia, Sandiwara marks Sean Baker’s return to his roots, utilizing an iPhone to capture the film’s visuals. This technique echoes his previous work in films like Tangerine and Snowbird, which solidified his reputation for guerilla-style filmmaking.

The project is a collaboration with the London-based fashion house Self-Portrait as part of their Residency Program, which was introduced last year. This initiative is designed to empower creatives from various fields, offering them the resources and platform to express their unique vision within the Self-Portrait brand’s infrastructure. The program aims to foster innovation by providing artists with the freedom to dream and create, spotlighting their talents to a broader audience.

Per Variety, which first reported on Sandiwara back in December, the film is described as “an immersive cinematic experience.”

While the project is expected to run around 30 minutes, its official length won’t be confirmed until its Berlinale debut. Following the premiere, the screening will be accompanied by a conversation with both Baker and Yeoh.

The Berlin appearance will also mark a major career milestone for Yeoh, as Baker is set to present her with the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement during the festival.

The Berlin International Film Festival runs from February 12 through February 22, 2026.
