In a precautionary move on Saturday morning, the Savannah Police Department (SPD) temporarily shut down White Bluff Road in both directions. This decision came as authorities dealt with a situation involving an individual experiencing mental distress at one of the gates of Hunter Army Airfield.

The road closure, which took effect around 10:38 a.m., spanned the stretch from Lee Boulevard to Eisenhower Road. This measure was implemented due to an incident at the Wilson Gate, according to a spokesperson for the Savannah Police.

When contacted for more details, representatives from Hunter Army Airfield provided a statement. It confirmed that at approximately 10 a.m., law enforcement was called to the scene at Wilson Gate to assist a person in mental distress. As a safety precaution, the gate was closed as the investigation unfolded.

News 3 reached out to Hunter Army Airfield for information and received the following statement:

“At approximately 10 a.m., law enforcement responded to a person at Wilson Gate on Hunter Army Airfield in mental distress. Out of an abundance of caution, the gate was closed while law enforcement investigates.”

Officials from the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield Public Affairs are advising residents and drivers to avoid the area as this situation remains ongoing. However, the Savannah Police have reopened the roads.
