Timothée Chalamet Opens Up About Shocking On-Set Fears and Actor Rivalries in ‘Marty Supreme

In the gripping film Marty Supreme, Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of a character embroiled in turmoil and violence is nothing short of compelling. Yet, behind the scenes, Chalamet faced his own set of challenges and admitted feeling a little anxious about his safety during the filming of this Oscar-nominated movie.

Timothée Chalamet said he worried about electrocution while filming ‘Marty Supreme’

One particularly nerve-wracking scene involved Chalamet’s character, Marty Mauser, crashing through the bathroom floor of a motel while in the bathtub. Reflecting on this intense moment during a Q&A session with Robert Downey Jr., Chalamet shared insights into his experience.

“I remember reading that part and thinking, ‘With any other project, this might just be the standout scene, what is this?’” Chalamet recounted, as reported by People. He continued, “I think those kinds of moments are what excite [director Josh Safdie] the most during filming. And there I was, in the buff but equipped with the necessary modesty garment—which I can only describe in, well, let’s just call it the ‘c*** sock’ for lack of a better term.”

As the scene unfolded, Chalamet became increasingly concerned for his safety, especially with the bathtub filled and the precariously positioned lighting setup looming overhead.

“Josh was buzzing with excitement that day, absolutely loving the energy on set,” he explained. “Meanwhile, I was in the tub, surrounded by water, and I glanced up to see lights hanging rather precariously from our rig. I had to pull Josh aside and ask, ‘Has this been secured properly? Nothing’s going to fall into the water, right? That’s not how I envision my exit!'”

“Josh was so excitable that day and loving it. And we’re in the bathtub,” he added. “It’s practical. There’s water. And I look up and there’s lights that are hanging off our rig basically. I pulled Josh aside. I was like, ‘Man, has this been properly done? It’s not going to collapse in the water? It’s not how I want to go out.’”

Luckily, they shot the scene without issue.

He admitted a fellow actor threatened him on set

During the motel scene, Chalamet acted alongside a non-professional actor. Safdie often casts non-actors in his films.

“I won’t say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors … that I find it really thrilling to work with, but sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them,” Chalamet said (per People). “And I’m really getting in the guy’s face, and I’m really trying to get him angry with me. I was saying to Josh, ‘He’s not getting angry with me, he’s not getting angry with me.’”

The actor grew angry, but at Chalamet, not his character.

“I did another take, and then the guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to fuck with me. You don’t want to see me angry,’” Chalamet said. “I said to Josh, ‘Holy s***, who do you have me opposite, man?’”

Timothée Chalamet is hoping for an Oscar for his role in ‘Marty Supreme’

Chalamet has picked up a number of wins on the awards circuit for his role in Marty Supreme. He received an Oscar nomination for the role, and admitted he would love to win. He said he wanted to help the movie — and the industry at large — in any way he could, including by winning awards.

“All these award things, they supplement the movie,” he said (per Variety). “I’m not going to turn this into a monologue about the crisis of theaters and stuff, but when you go to an awards show, everyone’s participating in an advertisement for each other — in the best sense of the word, I’m not saying that in a malicious way.”

He added that he did not want people to think he was desperate for the award, though.

“I don’t want it to be misinterpreted that the world is in the condition it’s in and I’m going to bed like, ‘F*** man, I need that [Oscar].’ You know, I’m living on planet Earth.”

Chalamet has previously received Oscar nominations for Call Me By Your Name and A Complete Unknown.
