Unified Reaction to “The Mandalorian” and Grogu Super Bowl Trailer Captivates Audiences

Super Bowl events are known for unveiling a slew of movie trailers, especially for blockbuster franchises. This year, a new teaser for “The Mandalorian and Grogu” captured the spotlight, but it seems “Star Wars” enthusiasts have been left less than impressed.

Critics, like X user Ryan Arey, compared the ad unfavorably, likening it to an Energizer Bunny parody rather than a serious movie preview. Many fans have voiced frustration with what they see as poor and inconsistent marketing efforts. The initial teaser for the film has been labeled by some as one of the weakest in “Star Wars” history. User SloppyBowser went so far as to call it the worst-marketed movie to date, with others like YourAnonTruth1 expressing disbelief over the lack of a coherent marketing strategy.

The main issue for viewers was the teaser’s choice to parody other Super Bowl commercials instead of setting up the film’s narrative. “The Mandalorian and Grogu TV spot was a fake truck commercial?! That was the best they could do?” questioned derekwkim, clearly unimpressed.

Fans have been left puzzled about the film’s storyline, especially since the last encounter with Din Djarin and Grogu showed Din adopting Grogu and planning to continue his Jedi training. The third season finale of “The Mandalorian” depicted Din settling into life as a single father while preparing Grogu for the Jedi Trials.

In response to the speculation, Lucasfilm released a plot synopsis alongside the first trailer. It reveals that following the Empire’s collapse, scattered Imperial warlords still pose a threat across the galaxy. With the New Republic striving to maintain the Rebellion’s hard-won peace, they call upon the renowned Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu to help secure their future.

But the biggest problem consumers had with the commercial was that it chose to parody other Super Bowl ads instead of explaining the film’s premise. “The Mandalorian and Grogu TV spot they came up with … was a fake truck commercial?!?! Are you kidding me? That was the best they could do!?!? hahahahaa,” remarked derekwkim.

The Mandalorian and Grogu will be forces for good in their movie

For quite a while, “Star Wars” fans had no idea what “The Mandalorian and Grogu” would actually be about. When we last saw both characters in the Season 3 finale of “The Mandalorian,” Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) had officially adopted Grogu. All but settling down as a single father, Din opts for honest work while planning to continue Grogu’s Jedi training, including taking him to go through his Trials — a series of five tests young padawans have to pass to become full-fledged members of the Order.

Fortunately, LucasFilm has released a plot synopsis in conjunction with the first look trailer. It reads, “The evil Empire has fallen, and Imperial warlords remain scattered throughout the galaxy. As the fledgling New Republic works to protect everything the Rebellion fought for, they have enlisted the help of legendary Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his young apprentice Grogu (as himself).”

The film — which will also feature Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Huttlet, son of Jabba — will be released on May 22, 2026.
