An unusual culinary choice has captured attention at a university cafeteria in Germany, as kangaroo chili became the talk of the town.
According to a report by Münchner Merkur on Sunday, this distinctive dish, paired with Basmati rice, was recently introduced at the canteen of a university in Erlangen, Bavaria.
The communications team at Friedrich Alexander University noted that while some diners were curious and sought confirmation about the use of kangaroo meat, the dish was largely met with enthusiasm.
“We sold the approximately 400 planned portions and received a wealth of positive feedback,” the university was quoted as saying in the newspaper.

The menu’s intriguing addition even sparked online discussion. One Reddit user shared a snippet of the menu with the headline: “When the canteen is in an experimental phase again.”
Users exchanged views about the taste.
“Can highly recommend kangaroo, tastes very good,” one person wrote.
Directly below came an opposite opinion: “Kangaroo meat tastes disgusting.”
Kangaroos in abundance
There was an estimated population of 58 million kangaroos in Australia in 2002. They are among the most abundant large wild land mammal on earth.
There are 48 species of macropods in Australia and of these, only five can be commercially harvested. In addition, two species of wallaby are harvested in Tasmania.
The kangaroo industry is worth around $200 million per year and directly employs 4,000 people.
