CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (—) The Chatham County Police Department is currently investigating a case where a local woman was defrauded of more than $76,500 by scammers.

The incident began on a Friday when the woman received a call from an unidentified individual claiming her bank account had been compromised. The caller instructed her to withdraw all her funds for security reasons.

According to authorities, she first withdrew $32,500 from a Wilmington Island bank and handed the cash to a stranger in the parking lot. She then proceeded to a second bank on E. DeRenne Avenue, where she took out $34,000, which was also delivered to an unknown person waiting outside. Lastly, she withdrew $10,000 from a third bank, again handing the money to someone she did not know in the parking lot.

In total, the woman was scammed out of $76,500.

The police are urging the community to be cautious, highlighting that there are numerous scams in operation. They advise skepticism towards anyone claiming issues with personal financial accounts.

If you receive a call or text from someone claiming that there is an issue that must be solved by making an immediate payment, contact the police.

“Do not act or give any information until you have independently verified the claims. Do not give in to pressure, threats, or coercion. If you have been scammed, please report it to police and your financial institution,” the CCPD said.
