Jacob Ramsey delivered the winning strike as Newcastle United clinched a rare victory on the road, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1. This win relieved some of the pressure on Newcastle’s head coach, Eddie Howe, while escalating the concerns for Tottenham’s manager, Thomas Frank.
Both managers faced intense scrutiny ahead of this Premier League encounter, each needing a change in fortunes after disappointing performances.
Tottenham entered the match still in search of their first league triumph of 2026, whereas Newcastle had only one win in their last eight games across all competitions. On this occasion, it was Howe’s team that rose to the challenge.
Newcastle strike first before the break
Newcastle went ahead just before halftime with an unexpected contributor.
Defender Malick Thiaw capitalized on a rebound, striking after Guglielmo Vicario had blocked his initial header from an Anthony Elanga cross, thus giving the visitors the lead.
The goal rewarded Newcastle’s discipline, especially as they lined up without a recognised striker, and gave them control heading into the interval.
Spurs rally briefly after restart
Tottenham showed greater urgency after the break and drew level from their first corner of the match.
Xavi Simons’ delivery was nodded back across goal by Pape Matar Sarr, allowing Archie Gray to hook the ball into the net and ignite the home crowd.
The equaliser sparked a short-lived surge from Spurs, but their inability to sustain pressure soon showed.
Ramsey delivers decisive moment
Newcastle regained the lead when Anthony Gordon drove into the penalty area and found Ramsey, who guided a composed first-time finish into the bottom corner.
It was the midfielder’s first goal for the club since his summer move from Aston Villa.
Despite late pressure, Newcastle held firm to secure only their third away league win of the season.
The victory lifts them to 10th place and provides Howe with a timely boost, while Tottenham slip to 16th, with frustration among the home support once again evident.
