An Oregon resident is set to serve ten years in prison after claiming his fatal shooting of another man was prompted by the victim’s attempt to “embarrass” him.
Cresencio Flores, aged 27, admitted to first-degree manslaughter for the death of 45-year-old Jacob Forrest. The incident occurred on July 28, 2024, when Flores fired multiple shots at Forrest. As reported by The Oregonian, court documents reveal that Flores asserted he acted in self-defense. Forrest, whom Flores did not previously know, allegedly slapped him while wielding a fake gun.
After Forrest began to walk away, Flores drew his real firearm and fired nine rounds at him.
Documentation from the court details that Flores was outside a Portland, Oregon apartment complex with friends on the morning of the incident. Surveillance footage showed Forrest and three companions arriving in a nearby car. Forrest, seen with a convincingly realistic toy gun, tucked it into his waistband. Although the footage lacked audio, police indicated the two men exchanged words.
During their confrontation, Forrest reportedly slapped Flores and threw his bicycle into the street.
In a memo filed by prosecutors, they said Forrest was walking away from Flores when the latter stood up and aimed his real gun at Forrest, firing nine times. Forrest was dead when police responded to the scene.
After he was arrested two months later, Flores told police that he feared for his life and did not know Forrest’s gun was fake. He told police that he “believed Mr. Forrest was trying to embarrass” him.
Prosecutors originally charged Flores with first-degree murder, but dropped the charge as part of the plea deal. Ryan Solomon, one of the prosecutors, told Multnomah County Circuit Judge Christopher Ramras that the deal was fair during a hearing on Monday.
The judge sentenced Flores to 10 years in prison for first-degree manslaughter. Flores did not speak during the hearing.
