CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) — Although Olympic downhill champion Breezy Johnson didn’t secure a spot on the podium in Thursday’s women’s super-G, she left the event with an unforgettable memento.
The American athlete received a touching proposal from her longtime partner, Connor Watkins, near the finish line. In the presence of her U.S. Ski Team colleagues, Johnson joyfully accepted, sealing the moment with a heartfelt embrace.
Beaming with happiness, the 30-year-old showcased her new engagement ring—a striking blue sapphire encircled by white sapphires, elegantly set in white gold.

This delightful moment came about an hour after Johnson’s attempt to medal in the super-G was cut short by a crash. Her right pole made contact with a gate early in the course, causing her to tumble into the safety netting. Fortunately, she emerged unharmed and back on her feet.
