During the 2019 federal election, the Hume MP and then-energy minister was caught red-handed congratulating himself on his own social media post about adding 1000 extra carparks in his electorate.

Angus Taylor found himself in an awkward situation when he inadvertently praised his own actions on Facebook, using his official Angus Taylor MP account. The comment, which read “Fantastic. Great move. Well done Angus,” was swiftly removed, with the blame placed on a staff error. Nevertheless, this blunder has secured a place in the annals of Australian political social media history.

The incident quickly became a source of amusement, with social media users and commentators poking fun at the mishap. The gaffe even turned into a running joke within the corridors of parliament.

The notoriety of the mistake reached such heights that a mug, emblazoned with a screenshot of Taylor’s comment, was spotted circulating among the press gallery in Canberra.

Despite being seven years old, this faux pas might resurface as a point of contention for Taylor. He has announced plans to challenge Sussan Ley, the former opposition leader, for leadership in an upcoming party room meeting.

The seven-year-old gaffe may come back to haunt Taylor after he flagged his intention to challenge former opposition leader Sussan Ley’s leadership at a partyroom meeting today.

Taylor’s latest posts on Facebook, Instagram and X have been flooded with the same joke.

Hundreds of people are repeating the his 2019 comment, including official accounts from the Young Labor Community Queensland, the NSW Young Labor and UNSW Labor groups.

Taylor and his team haven’t made any move to delete the rush of comments yet.

The former opposition defence spokesperson successfully challenged Ley – just nine months after she took on the top job – leading the vote 34-17 in a brief partyroom meeting today.

Taylor said in a campaign message shared to social media – the subject of the mocking comments – that the Liberal Party has “lost it’s way”.

“I am running to be the leader of the Liberal Party, because I believe Australia is worth fighting for,” Taylor said in the video.
