The Labor Party swiftly launched a critical advertisement targeting Angus Taylor shortly after he was declared the new leader of the Liberal Party in a leadership spill this morning.
In a prompt response, Labor shared a video on its social media platforms around 10:30 am AEDT, carrying the message “The problem isn’t the leader, it’s the Liberals.” This came less than an hour after Taylor’s leadership victory was announced.
The advertisement echoes a frequent assertion by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, suggesting that the identity of the opposition leader is irrelevant because they are merely “another Liberal.”
The voiceover in the ad criticizes Taylor, labeling him as a “Morrison-Dutton leftover” responsible for past election policies involving increased taxes, job cuts, and opposing remote work. It also accuses him of undermining the Liberals’ first female leader.
It concludes with the statement, “Angus Taylor, just another Liberal.”
Labor has had sufficient time to prepare, given rumblings of a leadership spill began weeks ago, and Ley was dogged by rumours of a potential challenge by Taylor or fellow conservative MP Andrew Hastie for all of her nine months in the job.
Speculation has been particularly rife since this year – Taylor and Hastie met privately in late January while in Melbourne for the funeral of former Liberal MP Katie Allen.
Two days after that meeting, Hastie ruled himself out of any potential leadership content, saying he didn’t believe he had the support to become leader.
On Sunday night, the latest Newspoll revealed the Liberals’ primary vote had dropped to just 18 per cent, behind One Nation, and by Wednesday Taylor had resigned from the shadow frontbench.
