Matthew B. Roberts, the showrunner for Outlander, recently shared his thoughts on the future of beloved Scottish hero Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan, as fans anticipate the final season of the Starz historical drama. This insight follows the release of episode titles for the series’ concluding chapters.
In a conversation about the show’s direction, Roberts addressed speculation about Jamie’s possible fate, especially after teasers for the eighth and final season suggested the character’s death, as documented in Frank Randall’s (Tobias Menzies) book. This was reported by the Daily Record.
Roberts commented, “Just because it’s on a page doesn’t make it accurate, as we know.”
He elaborated further to Entertainment Weekly, posing the question, “Do they think they’re going to go change history, or do they think that maybe history wasn’t written correctly?”
Faithful followers of Outlander will recall that Jamie and his wife Claire Fraser, portrayed by CaitrÃona Balfe, have previously attempted to rewrite history, notably in their failed efforts to prevent the Battle of Culloden.
However, there’s also the notion that historical records aren’t always precise, and fans will be hoping this applies to Frank’s book.
Given the perilous nature of Outlander, Jamie’s life has been threatened numerous times throughout the drama.
The eighth series will be no exception as he readies himself for another battlefield encounter during the peak of the American Revolutionary War, which threatens his home at Fraser’s Ridge.
Viewers will have to patiently wait to discover if Jamie indeed meets his end and what the future holds for Claire and the rest of the family.
Furthermore, Outlander enthusiasts are eager to finally solve the programme’s greatest puzzle: Jamie’s ghost, after the apparition startled Frank in the opening episode.
Roberts offered an enigmatic response regarding whether audiences would at last receive clarity on the mystery and how it was feasible for Jamie to journey through time to the future and observe his future bride before she travelled through the stones.
He said: “What we tried to do is answer as many questions as we could authentically.”
Roberts continued: “There’s so many great storylines that get tied up – whether it’s in a tight bow or a very loose bow, that’s for the fans to judge.”
Outlander season 8 will premiere on Starz in the USA on March 6 and on MGM+ via Prime Video in the UK on March 7
