Rapper Da Brat and her wife Judy Dupart have candidly discussed the intense backlash they faced after sharing their decision to use a white sperm donor for the conception of their son, True Legend.

In a heartfelt appearance on the Pour Minds Podcast, the couple revealed that the negative reactions went far beyond mere criticism, extending to receiving death threats.

“We received death threats and were told things like we should miscarry,” Judy shared, reflecting on the startling intensity of the feedback.

The couple expressed their surprise at the uproar, clarifying that race was not a primary consideration in their decision-making process.

Da Brat and Dupart explained that while their initial preference was to find a Black donor, the reality of their search presented significant challenges. They noted that sperm banks have a limited number of Black donors, and once medical and genetic criteria were applied, their options became extremely restricted.

Da Brat and Dupart explained that they initially hoped to find a Black donor, but their options became extremely limited. They said sperm banks typically have a smaller percentage of Black donors, and after applying medical and genetic criteria, their available matches narrowed even further.

“I think a lot of people don’t even realize how small the pool is. When that happened, our Black man choice went down to zero. So we had choice of white, Asian. Like our baby, he’s technically Bulgarian,” Dupart said.

She continued, “We picked his donor based off of once we saw that we couldn’t have somebody that was our race. We tried to see height, we tried to see build…”

Despite the backlash, Da Brat said, “I think we made an awesome choice. I really do. And I’m very proud of the choice we made. Whether people understand it or not, I don’t give a [ __ ].”

Dupart said what upset her most about the negativity online was the timing of Brat’s pregnancy.

“The thing that bothered me the most was she was pregnant at the time when it was going on. And people were wishing death on our child, wishing the pregnancy was ended and terminated,” she added.

“But our baby is healthy,” she continued. “He was born, and he has ten toes, ten fingers, all of the things. He’s living. He’s active. And that’s what we wanted.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the couple also discussed their new memoir, The Way Love Goes, where they detail their IVF journey, including the miscarriage they experienced before welcoming True in 2023.
