In the early hours of the morning, a man shattered a window at the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology in Caboolture, located in the Moreton Bay region near Brisbane, and fled with several valuable artifacts.
Expressing their distress on Facebook, the museum announced, “We are devastated to report that the Museum was broken into last night, resulting in the theft of several of our cherished Egyptian artifacts.”
“We are actively collaborating with the Queensland Police Service in hopes of recovering our stolen items,” the statement continued.
The museum is renowned as “a treasure trove of world history that captivates both the young and the old.”
The museum’s Egyptian collection boasts an array of items, including predynastic stone tools and pottery, Dynastic amulets, jewelry, figurines, painted panels, ceramics, and a remarkable gilt cartonnage mask.
That was among the items stolen, alongside jewellery and a statue.
Cartonnage is a type of material used in ancient Egyptian funeral masks.
“Initial investigations indicate at approximately 3am, a man smashed a window of The Abbey Place property and took a quantity of priceless Egyptian artifacts before leaving the scene,” Queensland Police said.
Police are appealing for information.
