GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Authorities have verified that a gunshot was discharged at Kay Jewelers located in the Oaks Mall earlier today, though thankfully, no one was injured. Initially detained, the individual turned out to be the victim of the incident.
The Gainesville Police Department detailed that a couple, consisting of a man and a woman, were browsing at Kay Jewelers when three men entered the store and attacked the male shopper. During the altercation, as he was knocked to the ground, the victim managed to draw a firearm and discharge it once. Subsequently, all involved parties quickly left the area. The victim was found by Alachua County Sheriff’s Office officers a few blocks away, and a firearm was discovered in a nearby drainage system. The investigation remains active.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Office reported on social media that the Alachua County Combined Communications Center received multiple calls from the Oaks Mall reporting that shots had been fired inside of the mall.
Numerous resources from both the Gainesville Police Department and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office have responded.
Law enforcement on scene has confirmed that a gunshot was fired inside of the mall, but at this time there are no reported injuries.
GPD later reported that there was no active shooter by the time ASO posted their report about the incident. One person was in custody, and officers were working to identify other potential suspects.
GPD Officers and ASO Deputies are still working to clear the mall of any further threats. Please avoid the area.
