SAVANNAH, Ga. – Good morning and happy Sunday! Today has been designated a Weather Aware Day due to the likelihood of strong to severe thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening, particularly in areas south of I-16. As we enter the severe weather season, which typically intensifies over the coming months, it’s important to stay alert. While April is usually the peak month for severe weather, we’re starting to monitor days with potential storm activity from now on.

This morning, we’re starting off dry under overcast skies. While a few scattered rain showers could occur before the main event, significant rainfall is expected to hold off until later. Winds will begin to strengthen late in the morning as a cold front advances from the west.

Storm Timing:

  • Around 2 PM: Storms begin moving into inland counties
  • 2 PM – 8 PM: Window for strong to severe storms
  • Around 5 PM: Storms push east toward the coast
  • Line moves offshore later tonight
  • A few lingering showers possible early Monday morning

Main Threats:

  • Damaging wind gusts (primary concern)
  • Isolated hail possible
  • Brief spin-up tornado cannot be ruled out, especially across Southeast Georgia
  • Highest risk area: South of I-16. That is where we have a level 2 slight risk of scattered severe storms.
  • A Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Watch is going to possibly be issued today, especially for Southeast Georgia

Looking beyond today, we can expect some pleasant weather ahead. Monday will bring cooler temperatures with decreasing cloud cover and a persistent breeze. By Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures will rise back into the mid-70s. As we approach the end of the week, we can anticipate temperatures climbing to around 80 degrees. So, once we navigate through today’s stormy weather, we can look forward to a warmer and more tranquil forecast.
