The devoted followers of the gripping series Tell Me Lies faced a disappointing revelation just before the much-anticipated Season 3 finale: the curtain is closing for good with no Season 4 in sight.

Hours before the release of Episode 8 of Season 3 on Hulu, on Tuesday, February 17, the show’s creator, showrunner, and writer, Meaghan Oppenheimer, took to social media to break the news that the season finale would also mark the conclusion of the entire series.

“After three incredible seasons of Tell Me Lies, tonight’s episode will serve as the series finale,” Oppenheimer shared on Instagram, accompanying her message with a cast photo. “This was always the ending my writing team and I envisioned, and we are immensely proud of it,” she added.

The showrunner further elaborated, “Your enthusiastic response to this season motivated us to consider whether there was an organic way to extend the story. However, we ultimately felt that it had reached its natural end. My primary aim has always been to maintain the show’s quality and offer you the best experience possible. Though it’s bittersweet to part with something that brought so much joy, I am grateful we managed to tell a complete story with a purposeful conclusion—a luxury few shows enjoy. Thank you for your love for our series. We look forward to delivering more stories soon.”

Since its debut in 2022, the intense and addictive drama has captivated audiences with the volatile dynamics between Lucy (Grace Van Patten), Stephen (Jackson White), and their friends, exploring their lives across two timelines. While the Season 3 finale offers closure by wrapping up Lucy’s sophomore year and the group’s 2015 wedding reunion, the intervening years remain a mystery, leaving fans longing for more answers and hoping for the story to continue.

When Decider asked the creator if she had a set arc in mind after Season 1, she said, “I think it really just depends. I think most shows nowadays do well with three seasons. I think that’s a very clean, good number to me — especially when it’s something that’s a smaller story, not a big procedural thing. I would rather have something end when it’s good than just drag it out too long.” Ahead of Season 3, Oppenheimer also told Decider that the finale showed “the ending [she] had mind from the beginning.”

During Decider’s Season 3 finale interview with Oppenheimer, the creator cleared up several unknowns about the 2009 to 2015 gap years and shared additional insight into why she went out on Season 3. The full post-mortem interview (with finale spoilers) will publish on Tuesday, Feb. 17. So stay tuned for more answers and in-depth Tell Me Lies finale coverage on Decider.
