Arsenal, the current frontrunners in the Premier League, saw their two-goal lead dissipate in a surprising 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers, the league’s bottom team, at Molineux on Wednesday night.
This outcome thwarted Mikel Arteta’s squad from extending their lead at the top to seven points. Instead, their advantage over Manchester City remains at five points, with City having a game in hand that could potentially close the gap.
Arsenal in control early
The match began promisingly for Arsenal. Bukayo Saka celebrated his new five-year deal by netting a goal just five minutes in, deftly heading in Declan Rice’s cross to break his 15-game goal drought.
Arsenal seemed in control and strengthened their position in the 56th minute when Piero Hincapie scored his inaugural goal for the club, skillfully converting a pass from Gabriel.
With a 2-0 lead, Arsenal appeared poised for a straightforward victory. However, when Saka left the field for treatment, the team’s momentum faltered, unsettling their previously steady rhythm.
Wolves rally late
Wolves responded in the 61st minute through Hugo Bueno, who curled a precise effort beyond David Raya to reduce the deficit.
The hosts sensed vulnerability and pushed forward. Deep into stoppage time, confusion between Raya and Gabriel Magalhaes allowed substitute Tom Edozie, making his senior debut, to fire goalward. The ball struck Riccardo Calafiori and deflected in off the post for a dramatic equaliser.
The late concession stunned Arsenal and reignited questions about their resilience in the title race.
Having finished second in each of the past three seasons, Arteta’s side once again face criticism over their ability to sustain a championship challenge.
For Wolves, the draw offers encouragement despite their position at the foot of the table.
