Robots performing backflips and wielding nunchucks have wowed audiences during China’s annual New Year Gala.

Humanoid robots took to the stage with an impressive five-minute performance, showcasing a meticulously choreographed routine. This spectacle featured acrobatics, dance moves, and the use of various props, including dynamic interactions with child performers.

The performance reached its dramatic climax when a larger robot, positioned centrally, brandished a large sword while being elevated on a platform. Surrounding it, other robots energetically waved staffs, adding to the grandeur of the scene.

The performance was designed to show how China’s android and tech industries are rapidly advancing.

These robots were developed by Unitree Robotics, a Chinese company that was among several showcasing their cutting-edge android technologies during a four-hour gala celebrating the Chinese New Year.

The event featured a diverse array of performances, with some robots executing dance routines alongside human pop stars, while others entertained the audience with comedic skits.

China currently leads the global industrial robot market, accounting for over half of all robots installed worldwide as of 2024, according to the International Federation of Robotics.

Beijing is also looking to use robots to help defend itself from manpower shortages and rising labour costs.

While humanoids have so far been most visible in novelty appearances and entertainment like Monday’s show, they are also being piloted on assembly lines and in logistics hubs and science labs.

Even though on this occasion the robots were designed to look good and impress with their martial arts abilities, it could also be a sign of China flexing its muscle and looking to highlight its dominance in the field of robotics.
