MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KRON) – A catastrophic avalanche near Lake Tahoe, California, has claimed the lives of at least eight individuals, with one still unaccounted for, marking it as the region’s most fatal incident in decades. Amid a fierce winter storm on Tuesday, rescuers managed to pull six survivors from a group of 15 skiers engulfed by the snow.

The deceased, aged between 30 and 55, include mothers from the Bay Area. Nevada County sheriff’s officials revealed that the rescue teams faced a grueling six-hour journey to reach the survivors, battling through blizzard conditions with gale-force winds that severely hindered visibility.
