In a significant development concerning a tragic incident from last year, authorities have apprehended a New York woman in Florida, charging her with reckless homicide linked to a fatal crash in Indiana.
Adria Wilkerson, 31, was taken into custody in Venice, Florida, according to an announcement by the Grant County, Indiana, Sheriff’s Office. Wilkerson is currently awaiting extradition to face charges in Indiana. The announcement can be found on the Sheriff’s Office’s official Facebook page.
The deadly incident occurred on October 1, 2025. A 45-year-old woman, Vickie Colley, was caught in the wreckage of her vehicle after the crash. Despite being rescued and rushed to a hospital, she succumbed to her injuries, as reported by WXIN.
According to court documents, the series of events leading to the crash began with reports of a black BMW driving erratically. The vehicle reportedly ran a stop sign, overtook a school bus and another vehicle in a no-passing zone, and even plowed through a farmer’s fence into a cow pasture before rejoining the road. Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered a head-on collision had occurred between the BMW, driven by Wilkerson, and a Chevrolet. The BMW was engulfed in flames, but bystanders managed to pull Wilkerson to safety.
Wilkerson suffered serious injuries and was transported to Lutheran Hospital for treatment.
Investigators said that Wilkerson crossed a double yellow center line and slammed into Colley’s Chevrolet.
Deputies learned in the course of their investigation that Wilkerson had abandoned her child at their home in New York and driven across Ohio to reach Indiana. She was stopped in Ohio but released when law enforcementdetermined she was not a threat to herself or others. It’s not clear if they knew she had abandoned her child.
Wilkerson’s family further told deputies that she had a history of “suicidal ideology,” court documents said.
A warrant for her arrest was issued on February 13, and she was arrested in on Tuesday.
