CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – In an exhilarating match on Thursday, Champaign Central’s girls’ basketball team secured a 53-46 victory over Mahomet-Seymour, clinching the 3A regional championship.
This triumph marks the Maroons’ first regional title in girls’ basketball since 2010, a significant milestone for the team.
“Achieving this requires immense dedication. These girls are truly resilient,” said Kris Bell, head coach for Central’s girls’ basketball team. “Every season is about getting everyone to buy into the team spirit, to function as a cohesive unit, and to build trust among each other. It’s challenging to achieve that commitment, but once it clicks, it’s incredibly rewarding to witness.”
The Maroons benefited from the stellar performances of two standout freshmen, Tailynn Sutton and Eden Harding, each contributing 14 points to the team’s victory at Mahomet.
“It demanded a lot of effort, especially with this group,” Sutton shared. “I’m thrilled for this team and the seniors, as we look forward to next year. It’s a joyous moment.”
“Just all like caring and having love for each other and just like respecting each other and getting to know each other,” Harding said of building a good team bond.
Bell says the team’s 2025-26 motto has been ‘Together.’
The Maroons are well aware a bright future, given the young talent, could be in the cards for years to come. However, they hope the make this season even more special than it has already been.
“We’re hoping we can go further, and hopefully get to the state championship,” Harding said.
Central will play the winner of Friday’s regional championship between Decatur-MacArthur and Taylorville in the sectional semifinals on Tuesday at Normal West.
